Module Specifications.
Current Academic Year 2024 - 2025
All Module information is indicative, and this portal is an interim interface pending the full upgrade of Coursebuilder and subsequent integration to the new DCU Student Information System (DCU Key).
As such, this is a point in time view of data which will be refreshed periodically. Some fields/data may not yet be available pending the completion of the full Coursebuilder upgrade and integration project. We will post status updates as they become available. Description This module provides hands-on training in selected molecular biology and immunology techniques to reinforce understanding of key concepts in these areas.
Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of the basic principles and applications of main bioanalytical techniques, including immunoassays and isolation and analysis of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). 2. Perform a range of bioanalytical techniques, such as cell culture, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), sodium dodecyl-sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), Western Blotting, chromatographic separation and purification of nucleic acids, spectroscopy, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) ensuring proper use of instruments and adherence to safety protocols. 3. Critically analyse and interpret experimental data obtained from bioanalytical experiments. Identify and resolve common issues that arise during bioanalytical procedures, including instrument malfunction, sample contamination, and data anomalies. 4. Collaborate effectively in teams to plan, execute, and report on bioanalytical experiments, demonstrating communication, teamwork, and time management skills. 5. Communicate the scientific results of bioanalytical experiments through in-class discussions and written lab reports, using appropriate scientific terminology and data visualisation techniques.
