Description

To enable students to undertake a research project in an area of biology. To develop laboratory skills and become independent in designing and executing experiments. To develop the ability to present, interpret and discuss research results.

Learning Outcomes

1. Design experiments and prepare the necessary materials
2. Apply laboratory techniques and/or computing skills in an experimental approach to investigative research
3. Operate instrumentation in an independent and competent manner
4. Interpret experimental results critically
5. Produce a clear and accurate record of experimental work
6. Present and discuss the results of investigative research

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

The student will spend 28 - 35 hours per week for a twelve-week period undertaking the project in the research laboratory under the supervision of the laboratory head.

On completion of the project, the student will present their results at a series of seminars to an audience of the peers and academic staff.

The student will subsequently submit a typed report of the research for inspection by two internal and one external examiners.
