Description

An introduction to digital photography as a technology of communication and representation in a creative media based environment.

Learning Outcomes

1. Apply technical competence in the use of digital 35mm (DSLR) format cameras.
2. Apply a basic critical understanding of the history of photography and uses of lens-based practice in contemporary visual culture.
3. Be able to understand, creatively interpret, research, execute and present a resolved body of work based on a photographic brief.
4. Evaluate work in the field, including one's own work, using professional terminology.

The module is delivered through a series of lectures, Lab sessions, workshop demonstrations, discussions and resource-based learning.

Photography: Contemporary Contexts
Overview of the lens based imaging across multiple media in contemporary visual culture.

Photographic Techniques 1: The Digital Camera
Image file basics. F- stops, shutter speeds, depth of field, ISO, exposure, bracketing, light and lens characteristics. Natural/artificial light. Flash on camera. Studio Flash

Photoshop Editing Techniques 1
Introduction to Photoshop CC. Basic image editing and interpolation

Photographic Techniques 2
Working with layers, typography and graphics to a creative/advertising brief

The Photographic Brief
Designing, writing and scheduling a project.
