Description

To develop an appreciation of Environmental issues and the role of Chemistry in these areas. To recognise and understand fundamental chemistry concepts explored through visualisations.

Learning Outcomes

1. To describe the important components of soil, water and the atmosphere
2. To be aware of the complex nature of Energy
3. To be aware of the complex nature of waste and waste management
4. Use visualisations to understand and describe chemistry concepts
5. Identify fundamental chemistry concepts which underpin and connect chemistry

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Chemistry
Chemical composition of the atmosphere; the greenhouse effect and cycles of Carbon and Nitrogen. An introduction to the chemical composition of water and soils. An introduction to Energy sources to include fossil, nuclear and renewable sources. Introduction to waste and waste recycling. An exploration of fundamental chemistry concepts.
