Current Academic Year 2024 - 2025

All Module information is indicative, and this portal is an interim interface pending the full upgrade of Coursebuilder and subsequent integration to the new DCU Student Information System (DCU Key).

As such, this is a point in time view of data which will be refreshed periodically. Some fields/data may not yet be available pending the completion of the full Coursebuilder upgrade and integration project. We will post status updates as they become available. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Description

This module has contributions from (a) laboratory work in organic, physical and inorganic chemistry; (b) focus on science education and (c) spectroscopic analysis and interpretation. The laboratory component focuses on development of manipulative and observational skills through experimental procedures and problem solving from a selection of relevant experiments in organic, inorganic and physical chemistry and interpretation of associated spectral data. Gaining knowledge for the practical interpretation of spectroscopy to include infrared and proton (1H) NMR spectroscopy is obtained through such laboratory experimental work and assisted by a dedicated spectroscopy workshop. Science education focus is also ensured through the development of experiments and activities of direct relevance to second level school science teaching and chemistry teaching.

Learning Outcomes

1. Conduct procedures in experimental organic and inorganic chemistry, involving synthesis and interpretation of spectroscopic data; such spectroscopy to include infrared and 1H NMR spectroscopy.
2. Conduct physical chemistry experiments to develop knowledge in areas such as spectroscopy, kinetics, electrochemistry and thermodynamics.
3. Prepare experimental reports to include chemical diagrams, reaction mechanisms and/or tabulated data as appropriate; record, analyse and critique the experimental data in order to make scientific conclusions.
4. Adhere to and develop an appreciation for the health and safety procedures in the laboratory as described in the laboratory manual and as detailed by the academic and technical staff in the lab.
5. Analyse and interpret the infrared and proton (1H) NMR spectra of simple molecules through experiments and an associated workshop in spectroscopy.
6. Develop and critique suitable activities including chemistry experiments for second level science teaching.

Reassessment Requirement Type
Resit arrangements are explained by the following categories:
Resit category 1: A resit is available for both* components of the module.
Resit category 2: No resit is available for a 100% continuous assessment module.
Resit category 3: No resit is available for the continuous assessment component where there is a continuous assessment and examination element.
* ‘Both’ is used in the context of the module having a Continuous Assessment/Examination split; where the module is 100% continuous assessment, there will also be a resit of the assessment
This module is category 1
