Description This module commences by introducing students to the discipline of Religious Education (RE) as an NCCA curricular area. It outlines various approaches to RE and then moves specifically into the context or RE in Catholic schools at primary level. Students engage with foundational literature concerning the theoretical context of Catholic RE as well as professional content knowledge. Students are introduced to participatory and empowering methods in primary religious education, with a focus on fostering young children’s spirituality and on teaching Sacred Scripture to young children. This knowledge is built on by further appreciating its pedagogical application through an analysis of the Catholic Preschool and Primary Religious Education Curriculum for Ireland and the Grow in Love RE programme (J.I. – 2nd Class). The role of the school in partnership with parents and parish is explored in the module and exemplars of good practices in this regard are introduced. Students are also afforded the opportunity to give specific attention to the planning of lessons assisting them in preparation for school placement. The module also seeks to develop their own religious literacy in ways that will enhance their ability to teach RE to primary school children. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
