Description

The aim of this module is to develop student skills and competencies associated with working outside academia, thus broadening their innovation emphasis and improving employability. This will be achieved through the integration of the theory and expertise acquired during their research programme, with relevant practical inter-sectoral experience obtained through working with relevant enterprises, e.g. companies and/or other organisations, in Ireland or abroad.

Learning Outcomes

1. Apply theoretical and practical aspects of the research programme to relevant practical work experience in relevant enterprises, companies or organisations based in Ireland and abroad.
2. Demonstrate initiative and ingenuity in deriving novel solutions to specific problems encountered during the time spent with the enterprise partner.
3. Assess the importance of task management, planning, working in teams and interdisciplinary collaboration in an enterprise environment.
4. Communicate concepts and ideas that formed part of the enterprise experience by oral, written and graphical means.
5. Demonstrate professional attributes, such as attendance, punctuality, reliability, etc.
6. Document their duties performed, distinguishing for their own role, and describe the development of products/processes and related commercial issues.
7. Identify their own learning needs; assess their progress in developing technical and/or professional skills and be able to outline a career plan.

Report(s)Report based on the students enterprise experience. The report will follow a clearly defined template and is to be submitted 1 month after the student returns from the enterprise partner. This report is assessed by the student's academic supervisor and enterprise mentor, and feedback will be provided to the student.70%
Oral ExaminationOral presentation to other graduate students that details their experiences. This presentation is assessed by their academic supervisor, another appointed representative of the academic staff, and the enterprise mentor will also be encouraged to attend and input to the assessment. Feedback will be provided to the student.15%
Performance evaluationA site visit by the student's supervisor to the enterprise partner location, where the supervisor will complete a form with the enterprise mentor detailing the performance of the student, the conditions of employment and the enterprise mentor perception of the student's performance.15%
