Description

The airline industry is a regulated industry which in addition to needing to be profitable must also respect security and safety concerns. This module will provide students with an overview of the industry from primarily an economics perspective. This module will introduce students to the economic analysis of the industry and of a number of policies currently affecting the industry (liberalisation, regulation, competition).

Learning Outcomes

1. understand how economics would analyse the airline industry and its impact on the national economy
2. describe and discuss the changes to the structure of the industry since it began to be deregulated in the late 1970s
3. discuss the special features of pricing in the airline industry
4. describe and discuss the reasons for and methods used to price regulate airports and air traffic control companies
5. describe and discuss the role of competition policy in regard to the airline industry
