Description

The course investigates and explores the evolution of the sociosexual narrative of Ireland of the XXth and XXIst centuries, through an analysis of the salient events which have shaped Ireland's sociosexual panorama, using contemporary social, artistic and cultural artefacts as texts. Theoretical perspectives from masculinity studies, women studies, heterosexual studies, LGBT studies and Queer studies are being used as a platform to analyse contemporary Irish society, literature, art and culture.

Learning Outcomes

1. explore, from contemporary literary and non-literary perspectives, the nature of Irish sexual discourses
2. assess the way contemporary cultural artefacts both reflect and respond to Irish sexual paradigms in Irish society
3. acknowledge the centrality of the issue of sex and sexuality in today's Ireland
4. demonstrate an adequate level of critical understanding as a means to address Irish contemporary debates
5. articulate orally and in written form their thoughts and ideas

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Format
The course is conducted to English and consists of one plenary session and a tutorial. Attendance is compulsory and students are expected to attend all sessions and contribute to tutorials. The are also expected to engage in online learning activities on a regular basis.

Activities
On top of the socio-historical text, and of the literary/sociocultural texts on the program, authentic material, including Irish newspaper articles, extract from Irish television news and radio programs, Irish Government reports and sexuality agencies, and Irish literary material will frequently be used, either in class or during independent learning time.

Topic
The topics addressed in the plenary sessions and assessed in the continuous assessments ( essay and class presentation) will pertain to the fields of sexuality studies and as such may include, but are not limited to: contemporary sexuality, Irish marriage, divorce, abortion, same sex love, family, from contemporary heterosexual, LGB, transgender or queer perspectives.
