Description

The overall objective of the module is to provide students with skills that will enable them to become autonomous learners, to increase language proficiency, to facilitate their use of different registers of language in written and oral production and to gain an insight into sociocultural adaptation issues. This module is conducted through French. Throughout the year, students will perform individual and collaborative tasks to develop their confidence and competence in spoken and written production as well as spontaneous interaction in the target language. They will moreover develop digital literacies that will help them source and critically evaluate information about French speaking cultures and produce spoken and written texts and digital artefacts directed to a Francophone audience, as well as lifelong language learning strategies. The module consolidates and expands the student's awareness and knowledge of the key issues in contemporary France and also consolidates transferable skills such as teamwork and communication skills through a variety of activities and assignments.

Learning Outcomes

1. Produce precise written pieces on topics of interest and give his/her opinion about accumulated factual information on familiar and unfamiliar matters with confidence, write reflective pieces.
2. Understand a variety of multimodal texts on a familiar subject and take notes on points which strike him/her as important; synthesize and report information and arguments from a number of sources (spoken and written).
3. Display a sound knowledge of France and contemporary French society and culture as well as other Francophone cultures. Demonstrate an awareness of some of the sociocultural features (e.g. everyday living, interpersonal relations, social conventions etc.) of diverse communities they may join or interact with during a period of residence in a French speaking country (e.g. university staff, fellow students, social groupings, administration/officials etc.).
4. Draw on a sufficient range of language to give clear descriptions, express viewpoints and develop arguments, without much conspicuous searching for words when speaking, and using some complex sentence forms to do so (orally and in writing) and different registers depending on the communication genre and medium.
5. Demonstrate grammatical control (both written and oral), occasional errors will occur but will not hinder comprehension.
6. Demonstrate a sufficient level of digital literacies to fully creatively participate in French speaking digital spaces.
