Description

The overall objective of the module is to provide students with skills that will enable them to become autonomous learners, to increase language proficiency, to facilitate awareness of communicative functions and broaden their vocabulary range in written and oral production and to gain an insight into diversity in French and Francophone cultural spheres. This module is conducted through French. Throughout the year, students will perform individual and collaborative tasks to develop their confidence and competence in spoken and written production as well as spontaneous interaction in the target language as well as develop lifelong language learning strategies. The module consolidates and expands the student's awareness and knowledge of the key issues in contemporary Francophone spaces and also consolidates transferable skills such as collaborative work, creativity, critical thinking and digital literacies through a variety of activities and assignments.

Learning Outcomes

1. LO1 - Understand, synthesize and report, orally and/or in writing, the main arguments from a variety of authentic multimodal documents on a range of general topics.
2. LO2 - Draw on a sufficient range of language to give clear descriptions, express viewpoints and develop arguments, without much conspicuous searching for words when speaking, and using some complex sentence forms to do so.
3. LO3 - Produce content in a clear and coherent manner; demonstrate grammatical control in French; occasional errors will occur but will not hinder comprehension.
4. LO4 - Communicate orally showing control of the French phonetic system, different intonation patterns and with a degree of fluency and dynamism in both pre-planned and spontaneous interactions.
5. LO5 - Develop the students’ language and cultural awareness through themes that foster intercultural communicative competence and global citizenship education (engaging in a critical and empathetic approach to complex social processes), while critically reflecting on their learning process.
6. LO6 - Demonstrate a sufficient level of digital literacies to creatively engage with Francophone digital spaces.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

French Language and Culture through contemporary french and francophone culture and society
The module is conducted through French and will explore contemporary French and Francophone culture and society and also complex sociocultural issues with a stress on: i) Language functions and grammar elements according to the required level (i.e. express hypothesis, give advice, establish conditions, etc); ii) Vocabulary related to relevant contemporary themes; iii) Sociocultural aspects of France and Francophone countries through authentic resources; v) Creation of contents (digitally) individually and in groups; vi) Self-review and reflection on the learning process. Students will perform individual and collaborative tasks to develop their confidence and competence in spoken and written production as well as spontaneous interaction in the target language. They will work on the use of grammar and vocabulary in context and explore ideas about the target cultures as they arise in the context of the selected themes. Students will be guided in the development of life-long learning strategies and they will be expected to look for French language and culture learning opportunities beyond the synchronous sessions, actively engage in these activities, report on them and self-reflect on their learning process using the target language. This module is organised around weekly timetabled synchronous meetings in which students both as a class and in small groups will engage in communicative practice. Specific individual and group activities are required to be completed in a timely fashion before the weekly meeting to maximize learning during the session and after the session to consolidate and elaborate on the material covered in class.

Module Resources
Students are required to buy the Textbook "Cosmopolite 4 B2" (editor Hachette) and the corresponding Activity book "Cosmopolite 4 B2 Cahier d'activités" for this module. Some activities will require the sourcing and preparation of material and language resources by the students.
