Description

This module aims to consolidate students’ language competence and fluency with particular emphasis on the quality of spoken production. Reading comprehension and written skills are also reinforced through reading newspaper articles and using on line language resources. Awareness and knowledge of key aspects of current affairs in German-speaking countries are increased. In addition, team work and oral presentation skills are practised throughout the semester.

Learning Outcomes

1. Scan texts in order to locate and gather desired information from different written materials such as newspapers, letters, brochures, websites on familiar subjects.
2. Retrieve relevant information from authentic audiovisual sources in German on chosen topics.
3. Communicate orally and in an intelligible manner, on familiar topics related to his/her interests; enter unprepared into conversation to exchange, check and confirm information pertinent to everyday life, university life, interests, travel, etc..
4. Show a good degree of grammatical control; draw on a sufficient vocabulary to express him/herself on most topics pertinent to his/her everyday life such as university life, interests, travel, current affairs, etc. and make only a few mistakes leading to misunderstanding.
5. Engage in activities to develop capacity for lifelong learning; reflect on his/her own development and learning experience.
6. Make effective use of digital tools and resources for language learning and language use (spoken and written) including searching and retrieving relevant and reliable information.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Format
Classroom sessions are interactive and learner-centered. The syllabus focuses on increasing the language fluency and accuracy as well as covering essential cultural aspects through a variety of tasks, class activities and group projects. Students will be asked to work in pairs/groups and complete a variety of language assignments/tasks. On successful completion of this module, students will be able to function at an A2+ level, orally and in writing.
