Description

The module introduces the student to a range of texts for translation, with a view to providing a basic understanding of general translation practice and developing German and English language skills.

Learning Outcomes

1. Translate a range of general texts from German into English, e.g. literature, journalism, business correspondence.
2. Identify and explain translation challenges encountered with reference to concepts such as text type, register, collocation, nominalisation, etc.
3. Source and utilise appropriate background documentation of relevance to the task of translation.
4. Make good use of lexicographical resources

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Texts to be translated may include
Poetry/prose/short stories; tourist brochures/information; journalistic texts: short news bulletins, article summaries, advertisements, film or book reviews etc. Assessment: Examination: 100%. Students will be asked to translate a text of approx. 200-250 words and will also be required to comment briefly on their translation approach and choices. N.B. The use of monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, thesauri and student glossaries (printed or handwritten) is permitted.
