Description

The main purpose of this module is to increase students‘ fluency and accuracy in speaking and writing German as well as to improve their comprehension of both written and spoken German. The module is particularly designed to introduce students to business German vocabulary and concepts.

Learning Outcomes

1. Scan material written in German in order to locate desired information to fulfill a specific task.
2. Comprehend material presented aurally in German in order to locate information to complete a specific task.
3. Produce straightforward, connected written texts on familiar business topics and contemporary issues / current affairs.
4. Research information on a business topic and present it orally and in writing in different formats in a concise, comprehensible manner.
5. Participate in (either online or face-to-face) discussion on a business topic.

Directed learning50Self-directed study based on the material covered in class with a focus on preparation for the vocabulary tests which take place on a regular basis throughout the semester.
Workshop40Interactive, live seminar sessions, possibly including relevant events in the Languaculture Space or similar.
Assignment Completion25Identify and gather information on a company. Organise this material and prepare a powerpoint presentation accompanied by an oral commentary. Present to peers and engage in discussion. Collaborate with partner where this option has been selected for the assessment.
Directed learning40Complete online exercises set. Watch German materials recommended (television series, online series, German news (including slowed down option)). Complete grammar exercises allocated.
Independent Study95Further study dependent on individual areas in need to development, including tandem and audiovisual work, to be advised.

The materials for this module are provided on its LOOP page. They include oral, aural and written materials developed, for example, by the Goethe Institute, Deutsche Welle, wirtschaftsdeutsch.de and the ‘Der, Die, DAF’ Portal; as well as additional materials sourced and/or designed by the module coordinator. Links are also provided to appropriate online dictionaries and grammar resources, and to interactive online exercises drawn for example from the resource anyone4german.com.
