Description

This module is conducted in most parts through German. Throughout the year, students will learn basic communication skills in their target language through performing individual and collaborative tasks. Students will develop their ability and competence in spoken production and basic oral interaction in the target language while also establishing solid listening and writing skills. Students will develop skills that will help them understand and critically evaluate information about German culture and produce spoken and written texts directed to both Irish and German audiences. Lifelong learning strategies will also be developed to enhance language learning.

Learning Outcomes

1. Understand the overall meaning of short texts from a variety of simple texts dealing with everyday topics (e.g lifestyle, hobbies, sports, weather, cultural events),being able to derive the probable meaning of unknown words/signs from the context.
2. Demonstrate effective oral skills in a range of social situations (e.g presentation or description of people, living or working conditions, daily routines and basic past activities and personal experiences).
3. Produce short texts on matters of personal relevance e.g. write short basic descriptions of events, activities and personal experiences using present and past simple. Also, engage in basic social communication online (Sharing news and making or confirming arrangements to meet).
4. Demonstrate control of basic structures of the language as well as increasingly complex grammatical structures (e.g word order in main and subordinate clauses, the use of genders and cases, adjectival endings, verb tenses).
5. Continue identifying economic, social and cultural similarities and differences between Ireland and Spanish-speaking countries.
6. Use IT skills to access language specific-resources (life-long learning) to be able to reflect on your own learning path in your future progression in the language.
