Description

The purpose of this module is to allow students to critically engage with contemporary social, political and cultural issues in Germany through a range of authentic media. The focus will be on spoken and written language skills.

Learning Outcomes

1. Understand extended speech, most TV news, current affairs programmes, and texts and follow complex lines of argument, provided the topic is reasonably familiar.
2. Interact fluently & spontaneously in German, displaying adequate oral comprehension in conversation, and take active part in discussions in familiar contexts, accounting for and sustaining/negotiating his/her views.
3. Present orally clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to his/her field of interest and be able to explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options, privileging analysis and discussion over simple presentation of facts.
4. Produce written pieces to express oneself with in clear, well-structured text, expressing points of view at some length, presenting arguments and offering constructive peer critique, while selecting a style/register appropriate to the reader in mind.
5. Show a relatively high level of grammatical control and connectors and a grasp of complex syntax and cohesive devices to enable full comprehension and a structured confident expression in a variety of contexts (styles/registers). Display adequate proficiency in the pronunciation of German and understand the phonemes used in German.
6. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of contemporary German culture by exploring recent social, political and cultural issues and events.
7. Engage in activities to develop capacity for lifelong learning and transferable skills: Reflect on his/her own development and learning experience by making effective use of digital tools and  resources; teamwork and negotiation skills.

Directed learning44Directed learning in tutorials and consultations. Participation in oral and written learning activities, such as discussion forums, exercises, quizzes, and other activity types on chosen topics and related tasks with formative feedback (contributes to a 10% participation and engagement mark).
Assignment Completion20Assignment Completition. Students prepare and submit material-based assignments on a regular basis (portfolio, Loop).
Independent Study70Individual Study. Students use provided sources, additional material to study individually to related and/or relevant subject to progress.
Group work50Collaborative and interactive Study. Self-planned interaction with classmates, reading of and listening to authentic material, completion of collaborative tasks in pair and group work.
Independent Study66Preparation of weekly material. Students prepare the weekly provided material (on Loop).
