Description

This module will provide students with a broad understanding of the history of the Habsburg Empire 1848-1918. The course will also cover modernisation in East Central Europe, theories and history of nationalism, and the culture of the late Habsburg Empire. It will pay particular attention to the histories of Austria, Bohemia and Moravia, Hungary, Poland and to the Jews of the Empire.

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate a broad understanding of Habsburg history 1848-1918
2. Understand theories of cultural and separatist nationalist movements
3. Demonstrate a broad understanding of Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Austro-German and Jewish history
4. Understand the cultural history of the late Empire and of Vienna
