Modern data protection in the EU law is founded on European law. Privacy is protected by the European Convention on Human Rights and a right to the protection of personal data is recognised in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. Numerous high-profile cases on data protection have come before the Court of Justice of the European Union. The GDPR is also a part of EU law. This module will examine the history of privacy in the EU and the foundations of modern data protection law.
