Description

This module offers an opportunity for students to develop their knowledge of Irish music through aural, practical, and academic engagement. Students will study historical collections, sean nós songs, English-language songs, dance-tune types, traditional and contemporary instruments, regional styles, ornamentation, and principal exponents of the tradition.

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate a solid understanding of Irish traditional music, its features, its principal exponents, and its influences from and on the cultural life of Ireland and beyond.
2. Identify and adapt appropriate resources for the learning and teaching of Irish vocal and instrumental music, including regional styles.
3. Engage with key historical collections and identify their contribution to contemporary performance practice.
4. Gain a practical understanding of the features of Irish traditional music through active listening and performance.
5. Apply knowledge and competencies gained to the teaching context.
