Description

This course explores the history and development of late nineteenth-century music through to contemporary music: the principal forms, techniques and styles; music in its political and cultural context in Europe and the United States; and the relationship between music and other arts, and between music and evolving aesthetics of composition.

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the forms, techniques and aesthetics of music in the late-nineteenth century and in the twentieth century.
2. Engage in research into current trends in contemporary music, and engage critically with ideas of composition and performance.
3. Display analytical skills acquired through the study of key works from the period.
4. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of cultural and philosophical influences on compositional ideals.
5. Build on a solid foundation for the teaching of historical and analytical perspectives in late-Romantic and contemporary music.
