Module Specifications.
Current Academic Year 2024 - 2025
All Module information is indicative, and this portal is an interim interface pending the full upgrade of Coursebuilder and subsequent integration to the new DCU Student Information System (DCU Key).
As such, this is a point in time view of data which will be refreshed periodically. Some fields/data may not yet be available pending the completion of the full Coursebuilder upgrade and integration project. We will post status updates as they become available. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Description Simulation is a common and very powerful operational research method for analysing complex operational/industrial problems, allowing for a deeper understanding of the behaviour of systems. This module focuses on the application of discrete event simulation modelling to operational problems, at the strategic, tactical and operational organisational levels. Students will learn and appreciate the use of simulation in industry, through gaining practical experience in problem solving through the utilisation of a commercial simulation software package, specifically towards supporting the mapping and modelling of business processes.
Learning Outcomes 1. Understand the nature and application of discrete event simulation experimentation 2. Appraise the value of business process mapping and analysis for decision making 3. Evaluate the characteristics of discrete event system methodology, including the effects of uncertainty on performance of modelled systems 4. Understand how to build, run, analyse and experiment with simulation models to support strategic, tactical and operational decision making 5. Describe the importance of experiment design, input and output data handling and translating process into modelling blocks in a commercial off the shelf discrete event simulation environment
