Description

This module introduces students to core mathematical concepts and supports their development of proficiency in basic mathematical skills. The module focuses on the concepts of variable, equality, set, number, function, graph and logic, and introduces students to mathematical proofs.

Learning Outcomes

1. carry out algebraic manipulations proficiently in solving a selection of equations and inequalities and in determining the properties of a selection of functions;
2. demonstrate a working knowledge of key mathematical concepts (including variables, equations and equality, order and inequality, function, graph) in a variety of situations;
3. apply a selection of mathematical proof techniques;
4. solve problems relevant to the module content;
5. show how mathematical definitions are used in proofs and algorithms and use mathematical language correctly;
6. generate examples of the mathematical objects studied in the module.

Resit arrangements are explained by the following categories:
Resit category 1: A resit is available for both* components of the module.
Resit category 2: No resit is available for a 100% continuous assessment module.
Resit category 3: No resit is available for the continuous assessment component where there is a continuous assessment and examination element.
* ‘Both’ is used in the context of the module having a Continuous Assessment/Examination split; where the module is 100% continuous assessment, there will also be a resit of the assessment
This module is category 1
