Description

This purpose of this module is to help participants to enhance their personal leadership skills through an extended action-learning process guided by the course leader. This module compliments the work done in related modules on institutional leadership and ethical issues in business leadership in providing the DCU MBA with its signature 'leadership' capstone theme.

Learning Outcomes

1. Exercise personal leadership more effectively in the workplace with their team and their peers, from the enhancement of particular leadership skills.
2. Deal with their own and others' emotional reactions to the stresses presented by leadership challenges in the workplace with enhanced insight and effectiveness
3. Learn more effectively from their own experiences when dealing with ongoing leadership challenges in the workplace
4. Research, design and implement new action-learning interventions to further enhance their leadership effectiveness

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

The centerpiece of this module is an extended action-learning exercise to enhance the participants' personal leadership skills

1. Personal leadership skills audit
The module begins with the participants carrying out a personal leadership skills audit using a well-established instrument.

2. Introduction and set-up
Two introductory sessions are used to explain how to interpret the audit results, introduce the pedagogic rationale for the module, provide an overview of the main course readings, choose the particular leadership skills that will become the focus of each participant's action-learning exercise and set up the platform for on-line interaction.

3. The personal leadership skills action-learning exercise
The main activity of the module is the design and execution of the action-learning intervention back in the workplace. The particular leadership skills chosen for this action-learning exercise are selected by the participants based on insights gained from their leadership skills sudit.

4. Sharing the lessons learned
The participants come together for a final classroom session to share the insights from the exercise and what they have learned.
