Students will be required to repeat the placement if competency is not achieved.
Description

This module will provide the student with the opportunity to practice basic nursing skills under supervision in the clinical setting. It will be divided into a one week introductory placement in semester 1 and a 5 week placement in semester 2. During the one week introduction, students will be introduced to the practice setting and get an opportunity to meet patients/children in a variety of settings. During the 5 week practice placement students will begin to develop confidence and gain experience of nursing practice in the clinical setting.

Learning Outcomes

1. Practice basic nursing interventions under the supervision of a qualified nurse.
2. Practice the basic skills associated with creating and maintaining a safe environment for the chld and family under the supervision of a qualified nurse.
3. Participate in assisting patients with activities of daily living under supervision.
4. Identify and use a range of techniques in communicating with child/family and the healthcare team.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Maintain a safe environment
Students will explore issues associated with maintaining a safe environment and become familiar with the correct use of manual handling aids, treatment beds and other aids to therapeutic care delivery.

Policies and Procedures
Students will be expected to become familiar with policies and procedures relevant to area of practice.

Assessment and Delivery of Care.
Students will participate under supervision in the assessment, delivery and documentation of care. They will have the opportunity to observe and question staff about what they do and why they do it.
