Description

This module aims to develop the student's competencies in caring for people with intellectual disabilities and mental health issues. The student will participate in discussing both the international and national perspective of assessing, caring and devising new innovative ways of dealing with people who have the two disabilities. Working with multidisciplinary teams in all settings will be explored. Classifying and describing the major mental health issues within society and how people with intellectual disabilities are coping will be discussed. Promoting optimal mental health will be a theme throughout the module. The students will be expected to participate in reviewing case studies, in conducting assessments, interact with the multidisciplinary team of lectures delivering the module, attend tutorials, seminars and lectures.

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate the ability to express opinions on the classifications and legal aspects of intellectual disabilities, mental health and dual diagnosis.
2. Debate the services to support people with intellectual disabilities and mental health issues nationally and internationally.
3. Summarise the need for assessment tools for planning the care and assessing capacity for people with intellectual disability with mental health issues
4. Evaluate the type and range of therapeutic interventions used in the practice settings for dementia and other contemporary mental health concerns.
5. Analyse multidisciplinary approaches used to promote the mental well-being of a person with an intellectual disability.
