Description

This is the second practice placement module in the third year intellectual disability nursing programme. Over the course of this module, the student is provided with opportunities to gain experience in a variety of health, education and care settings. This module also provides opportunities for the student to focus on the nature and purpose of nursing and multidisciplinary work in the area of intellectual disability. As a third year, the student is expected to build on previous learning and apply evidence-based knowledge to practice. Students will be required to demonstrate achievement of the learning outcomes of this module for progression. It is a requirement that students attend introductory workshops facilitated by the module coordinator and clinical placement support team. The workshops will be an opportunity to outline clearly the clinical and academic expectations and requirements of this module. The assessment of this module is the completion of a portfolio and a 1,500 word prescribed evidence assignment. Students are expected to participate in group work, class work as well as individual reading and reflection.

1. Appraise nursing and other frameworks in the assessment/planning of the individual/group needs
2. Deliver/evaluate best practice interventions
3. Collaborate with service users/family/team members
4. Demonstrate the role of the professional eg psychologist, speech and language therapist, physiotherapist. teacher
5. Critique the role of the nurse in the various placements of this module
6. Assesses own performance in delivering brief interventions using self-reflective practice
7. Demonstrates the procedure for signposting and referral to support services

Clinical placement276Allocated practice placements in specialitiy and core health settings. All placements need to meet Standard and Requirements of theNursing and Midwifery Board Ireland. Student must attend 100% of their practice placement to successfully complete the placement. Student must attend a minimum of 80% of their practice placement to undertake a practice assessment.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Practice skills, knowledge and attitudes
Opportunities will be provided for students to practice nursing in a variety of settings. To experience working with other members of the multidisciplinary team. To reflect upon their ever-developing knowledge of Intellectual disability nursing. Opportunities in Specialist Areas will include observing and questioning the specialist practitioner about what they do and why they do it. Developing a knowledge of specialist areas, will include participation with specialist in delivery of service. Reflect upon personal practice and observations. Communicate effectively with clients, families and other members of the team. Where appropriate participate in case conferences and individualised planning.
