Description This 4th-year module is a component of a 36-week Internship. It consolidates the completed theoretical learning and enables the integration of theory and clinical practice. It supports the achievement of clinical competence in preparation for the transition from student to registered nurse. During this module the intern student nurse will form part of the nursing team working within the multidisciplinary team, and will be allocated a caseload of patients supported by a preceptor. The Intern is expected to act on their own initiative and take responsibility for their clients nursing care requirements within their scope of practice. The learning outcomes for this module are derived from the Year 4 learning outcomes prescribed by the Nurse Registration Standards and Requirements (NMBI, 2023) and encompass the 6 domains of nursing outlined. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate, in clinical practice, the virtues of caring, compassion, integrity, honesty, respect and empathy as a basis for upholding the professional values of nursing and identity as a nurse 2. Use a systematic and problem-solving approach to develop and deliver a person-centred plan of nursing care, based on an explicit partnership with the person and or his/her primary carer 3. Demonstrate the application, in practice, of knowledge and understanding of the health continuum, life and behavioural sciences and the relevant applied principles that underpin a competent knowledge base for nursing and healthcare practice 4. Demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with people and other professionals in healthcare settings using empathic communication skills and techniques. 5. Practice collaboratively with the person, family and multidisciplinary team, using appropriate management and team competences in working for the person’s well-being, recovery, independence and safety. 6. Continue through the internship to develop professional scholarship through self-directed learning skills, critical questioning/reasoning skills and decision-making skills in nursing as the foundation for lifelong professional education, maintaining competency and career development. 7. Professional valuesThe intern student nurse must practice safely, compassionately, professionally, and responsibly. In keeping with the requirements and standards of nurse education, the internship provides the student nurse the opportunities to promote health, prevent illness and provide care across the continuum of health and social care. Care for people of all ages, groups, and communities, sick or well, and in all settings. (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI))Nursing practice and clinical decision makingUtilizing clinical judgement the student will use a relevant framework to assess a person's needs. The student will adopt a person-centered appraoch to care and will incorporate recovery-focused interventions based on best evidence and the needs/ goals of the person. Evaluation of nursing care will be collobrative and based on feedback from the person, family, and other health professionals in conjunction with the registered nurse.Knowledge competence, critical thinking and reflectionThe intern student nurses will analyse and suggest possible responses to situations in the practice setting which demonstrate that (s)he is practicing from a competent knowledge base and using critical thinking and reflection to inform practice.CommunicationThe intern student nurse is expected to demonstrate effective, person-centred therapeutic communication with the patient, family, and multidisciplinary healthcare team.Leadership and professional scholarshipDuring the Internship the student will demonstrate leadership skills, including effective delegation where appropriate.
