Description

The module aims to provide students with evidence-based knowledge and skills specific to health promotion at an individual and population level. The module will equip students with competencies relevant to the practice of health promotion in a variety of healthcare settings as outlined by the International Union of Health Promotion, the World Health Organization’s Ottawa Charter and the WHO-ASPHER Competency Framework for the Public Health Workforce. Students will be encouraged to apply their newly acquired knowledge to their specific role and the assessments will give students the opportunity to link theory to public health practice.

Learning Outcomes

1. Critically evaluate the definitions of health and wellbeing with an emphasis on the lifecourse approach to health
2. Describe and critically appraise the biological, psychological, social and commercial determinants of health
3. Articulate and demonstrate in-depth knowledge of key concepts of health promotion and appraise ethical issues associated with health promotion and public health initiatives
4. Critically appraise the settings approach to health promotion
5. Critique and apply understanding of health promotion models including behaviour change models
6. Discuss and critically evaluate how nurses can influence national and global health promotion and public health policy and practice

PresentationAssessment on health literacy. Students can choose to express their work as a poster presentation, a Powerpoint presentation or an Infographic. In addition to giving students the opportunity to achieve the learning outcomes it also gives the students choice in demonstrating their knowledge and skills, according to the UDL principle of provision of multiple means of action and expression.30%Week 6
AssignmentWritten critical analysis piece on the role of nursing in tackling health inequities relevant to their practice. This assessment will give the students the opportunity to demonstrate their achievement of a number of the module's learning outcomes through the expression of their understanding and knowledge of how nurses can contribute to health promotion and healthy public policy with the aim of reducing health inequalities.50%Week 12
Oral ExaminationThe interactive oral assessment will give the students an opportunity to present their knowledge of health literacy in their clinical setting.20%Week 7
