Description

This module, taught entirely through Spanish, aims to develop students’ language competence and fluency in written and spoken production at an intermediate level. Students will encounter a variety of literary and non-literary texts as well as a range of audio-visual sources in order to develop reading and listening comprehension. Awareness and knowledge of culture and society in Spanish-speaking countries are further consolidated. Moreover, teamwork and oral presentation skills are practised throughout the semester.

Learning Outcomes

1. Understand main points from authentic textual and audio-visual sources in Spanish on selected topics.
2. Express him-/herself coherently in simple writing on both familiar topics and some beyond his/her immediate personal experience, and show awareness of some text type conventions, such as personal email, blog entry, news article etc.
3. Communicate reasonably fluently orally on both familiar topics and some beyond their immediate personal experience, such as societal developments and cultural production in the Spanish-speaking countries, and to express own points of view. Draw on relevant and appropriate vocabulary to express him-/herself on topics concerning Spanish-speaking culture, popular culture, and related topics with some circumlocutions.
4. Demonstrate a good understanding of intermediate language and structures in order to communicate efficiently in a variety of contexts.
5. Make effective use of digital tools and resources for language learning and language use (spoken and written), including searching and retrieving relevant and reliable information.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Format
The course is conducted through Spanish. Timetabled sessions are interactive and learner-centred. Students are expected to attend and contribute to all sessions. They are also expected to engage in language learning activities on a regular basis.

Syllabus
The syllabus focuses on increasing the language fluency and accuracy as well as covering a variety of cultural aspects through a range of tasks, class activities and projects.

Class activities
Students will be asked to work in pairs/groups and complete a variety of language assignments/tasks. These can include but are not limited to: role-plays, interviews, mini-dialogues, language and cultural quizzes, cloze-tests, grammar exercises, written and audiovisual comprehension exercises and presentations based on short specific projects.
