Description

This module is conducted predominantly through Spanish. Throughout the year, students will perform individual and collaborative tasks to develop their confidence and competence in spoken production and oral interaction in the target language while reinforcing their listening and writing skills. Students will develop skills that will help them source and critically evaluate information about Spanish-speaking cultures and produce spoken and written texts directed to both Irish and Spanish-speaking audiences. Lifelong language learning strategies will also be developed during the module.

Learning Outcomes

1. Extract important information from a range of different text types such as newspapers, short stories, websites and audiovisual materials, on familiar subjects, such as everyday life, university life, interests, travel etc
2. Improve pronunciation and knowledge of phonetic system to communicate orally using simple interconnected sentences in both pre-planned and spontaneous situations being able to describe, narrate and formulate opinions.
3. Produce cohesive texts in Spanish using the most frequently occurring connectors to link simple sentences e.g in a story or on matters of personal relevance with a good degree of accurate use of Spanish grammar and theme-specific vocabulary.
4. Show a good degree of grammatical control; draw on a sufficient vocabulary to express him/herself on most topics pertinent to his/her everyday life such as university life, interests, travel, current affairs, cultural differences etc. Errors may occur. Yet, it is clear what the student wants to say.
5. Show ability to explain in simple terms features of the student’s own culture to members of another culture or explain features of the other culture to members of the student’s own culture.
6. Make effective use of digital tools and resources for language learning and language use and engage in activities to develop capacity for lifelong learning.

By the end of the module you will be able to know more about the different identities of the Hispanic Speaking World, to talk about different forms of travelling and being more critical about cultural stereotypes.
