Description

The courses prepares students to prescribe exercise for healthy and clinical populations

Learning Outcomes

1. To understand and contrast the acute cardiorespiratory responses to acute exercise in healthy and clinical populations and the impact of drug therapy
2. To understand and contrast the cardiorespiratory and metabolic responses to physical activity and exercise training in healthy and clinical populations
3. To understand the biological mechanisms underpinning flow mediated dilation, pulse wave velocity and jugular venous pressure in healthy and clinical populations
4. To understand the pathophysiology of heart failure and the short and long-term regulation of systemic blood pressure
5. To analyse and interpret a 12 Lead electrocardiogram (ECG) at rest and during an incremental exercise test in healthy populations and in individuals with cardiovascular and respiratory disease
6. To interpret the information obtained from exercise pre-participation health screening and clinical exercise testing with open circuit spirometry and 12-lead ECG to prescribe physical activity/exercise for both healthy and clinical populations

Group presentationStudents will be assigned to groups of 5. Each group will be assigned a topic related to exercise testing and prescription. They will prepare a 30 min presentation on the topic. The presentation will be followed by a Q & A. Each group will also submit a 500 words summary of the topic.25%n/a

Resit category 1: A resit is available for both* components of the module.
Resit category 2: No resit is available for a 100% continuous assessment module.
Resit category 3: No resit is available for the continuous assessment component where there is a continuous assessment and examination element.
* ‘Both’ is used in the context of the module having a Continuous Assessment/Examination split; where the module is 100% continuous assessment, there will also be a resit of the assessment
