Description

This module aims to present an overview of Judaism and examine some of the main areas of dialogue and disagreement in the context of Jewish-Christian relations. A foundational goal is to facilitate an engagement with Judaism through a selection of Jewish texts or studies about Judaism from the Biblical, Rabbinic, Medieval, Enlightenment (Haskalah), Post-Enlightenment (post-Haskalah), Shoah, and post-Shoah periods. Building upon this background, we will begin to access the history of Jewish-Christian relations, particularly some of the major strides that have been made since the horrors of the Shoah and to recognise the most promising areas, texts, and figures for improved Jewish-Christian dialogue as well as the best approaches in grappling with key areas of ongoing disagreement. The students will also be encouraged to attend local monthly meetings of the Irish Council of Christians and Jews during the term and to visit the Irish Jewish Museum.

Learning Outcomes

1. Understand key facets of Judaism, from key events in the Tanach to core themes of Rabbinic Judaism and the Haskalah.
2. Discuss the diversity of Jewish Post-Holocaust Theology.
3. Utilize theological and moral reasoning to evaluate changes and growth in Christian theologies since the Shoah.
4. Analyse the current state of Jewish-Christian dialogue and relations, especially regarding discussions on Jesus; religious pluralism; covenant; ethics; Islam; and the State of Israel.
5. Communicate effectively, in both written and oral forms.

Two contemporary case studies of Jewish-Christian Dialogue today will be studied.

Christology and Multiple Covenants: Christian Perspectives
Will examine the changing, post-Nostra Aetate Christian view on Judaism and the covenant never revoked
