Description

This module is an introduction to Latin. In this module students develop knowledge of elementary Latin grammar and develop skills in translating this ancient European language. Students will develop a working vocabulary of Latin that can be used in future research and study. In addition, the module introduces students to different genres of Latin literature and their specific characteristics and influence, from Vergil’s Aeneid to Christian Latin. In this way, students can familiarize themselves with the cultural history of Latin and encounter diverse texts in the original language as well as the translation.

Learning Outcomes

1. Recognise and translate a substantial Latin vocabulary;
2. Identify nouns, adverbs, adjectives and pronouns;
3. Understand cases and declensions;
4. Recognise Latin verb forms;
5. Translate simple text from Latin into English;
6. Analyse grammar of simple Latin sentences.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Latin Literature:
The Origin and Influence of Latin; Epic – Virgil; Rhetoric – Cicero; Historiography – Caesar; Christian Latin – Stabat Mater; Inscriptions.

Latin Grammar:
Nouns (Five Declensions) and Cases Pronouns (Personal and Demonstrative) and Relative Pronouns Verbs (First, Second, Third, Fourth, Mixed conjugation) and Irregular Verbs (Esse, Posse) Tenses (Present, Imperfect, Future, Perfect, Future Perfect and Pluperfect) Voices (Active and Passive) and Participles.
