Description

This module aims to build on the competences and skills previously acquired and to introduce students to new features of the language and aspects of the culture. Students will be familiarised with a wider range of everyday situations which go beyond those previously encountered and which will require the use of additional linguistic skills.

Learning Outcomes

1. Complete simple interactions in Chinese, such as asking for directions, talking about health etc.
2. Construct simple sentences discussing past events
3. Express simple needs and desires in Chinese
4. Extract the key points of simple texts or dialogues dealing with topics with which they are familiar.
5. Write approximately 500-600 simple Chinese characters

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Interactive on site synchronous lectures and tutorials
Reading Skills A variety of texts on general life topics such as health, occasion celebrations, traveling and shopping will be read, analysed and discussed in a group setting. Listening Skills A variety of monologues and dialogues will be listened to, analysed, discussed and replayed. Writing Skills Students will write short texts on given topics by using at least 350 new additional Chinese characters. Oral Skills Students will actively participate in interactive classes, apply new grammatical structures and speak freely on given topics.

Role Play
Various daily social situations will be set, prepared and performed with the application of both productive (writing and speaking) and receptive (listening and reading) skills.

Directed learning
Students will also engage in directed learning in and beyond classroom such as quizzes, exercises and multimedia presentations.
