Description

The module aims to introduce the students to a range of types of translation and provide them a basic understanding of general translation practice.

Learning Outcomes

1. Establish a basic understanding of linguistic differences between Chinese and English as well as a general command of translation techniques from Chinese into English.
2. Translate short texts of varied specialised discourse, such as literature, tourism, business, popular science and journalism, from Chinese into English.
3. Use appropriate background documentation relevant to the task of translation (e.g. dictionaries and online machine translation tools).
4. Produce grammatically correct, natural English texts.
5. Identify and explain translation challenges with reference to concepts such as register, text type and collocation.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Lectures, tutorials and directed learning
The module will bring specialised discourse/texts of various types, such as general life, business, tourism, science/technology, media and journalism, that are selected from Chinese language module textbooks, translation practice materials, print and online media source. Lectures and tutorials on translation practice: A variety of texts will be examined, analysed, discussed and translated in either group or individual settings led by the lecturer, so are the specific translation techniques from Chinese into English. Directed learning: Weekly after-class exercises will be given followed by formative feedback.
