Description This module aims to help the students to both acquire Chinese language and further develop their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills as well as independent learning skills. This module also aims to develop the students’ communicative skills which would help them to engage in academic activities during their year abroad study in China year 3. ZH292 students are expected to master 1,200 common Chinese characters related to society, daily life, workplace and campus life. The use of Chinese language is optimized in ZH292 classes. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Outcomes 1. Understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure etc., including short narratives. 2. Initiate, maintain and close simple, face-to-face conversation on topics that are familiar or of personal interest. 3. Give or seek personal views and opinions in discussing topics of interest. 4. Produce writing compositions on everyday topics using Chinese characters. 5. Find and understand relevant information in everyday material, such as letters, brochures and short official documents. 6. Understand essential aspects of Chinese culture, including interpersonal relations and basic value-systems. 7. Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Reading SkillsA variety of authentic texts on different topics will be read, analysed and discussed in a group setting. Consolidation of characters and words acquired previously and acquisition of additional new characters and words.Listening SkillsA variety of authentic conversations of more formal registers of spoken Chinese will be listened to, analysed and repeated in class.Writing SkillsStudents will write writing compositions, creative and more formal, on given topics and current affairs. They will develop their range and active application of more advanced grammatical structures.Speaking skillsStudents will actively participate in simple discussions in class.
