Description This module is designed for students who are interested in learning Chinese but have no prior knowledge of the language. It encompasses both language and cultural aspects. The primary goal of this module is to create an interactive language environment that fosters learning through engaging in pair and group communicative tasks both inside and outside the classroom. By actively participating in these tasks, students will not only enhance their language skills but also develop their intercultural communication competence. Students will develop understanding of both the shared elements and the unique characteristics of Chinese culture in comparison to their own cultures. By the end of this module, students are expected to achieve proficiency at the A1.1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate basic proficiency in spoken Mandarin Chinese, including asking and responding to simple questions in everyday situations, such as greeting, self-introduction, food ordering. 2. Understand basic structures of the Chinese writing system-Characters. Be able to produce simple texts in writing on matters of personal relevance as well as personal online postings using short sentences about e.g personal information, hobbies, likes and dislikes. 3. Understand the basic principles of pronunciation-Pinyin and some simple grammar structures. 4. Appreciate and demonstrate basic knowledge of Chinese culture and customs, including festivals, number superstitions, Chinese diet and cuisine differences. 5. Begin building an awareness of social and cultural similarities and differences between Ireland (or their own country) and Chinese-speaking countries. 6. Critically reflect on their own learning to identify future progression in Chinese through e-portfolio. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
