Description

This module is designed for students who have completed the elementary level or possess a basic understanding of Mandarin Chinese. This module aims to further develop students' language skills, focusing on expanding vocabulary, improving grammatical accuracy, and enhancing their ability to communicate effectively in Chinese. It will enable students to acquire the necessary language skills to carry out practical tasks in real-life situations, such as seeking medical assistance, obtaining public transportation information, and making requests for refunds or returns etc. Through engaging activities and cultural exploration, students will deepen their understanding of Chinese language and culture. By the end of this module, students are expected to achieve proficiency at the A2.1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate the ability to understand and use specialised vocabulary in real-life situations, such as medical consultations, transportation inquiries, and customer service interactions. Be able to extract information from a variety of basic authentic texts.
2. Engage in conversations and discussions on a wide range of topics, expressing ideas, giving explanations, and making requests with confidence.
3. Produce short texts on matters of personal relevance e.g. write short basic descriptions of events, activities and personal experiences. Confidently engage in basic social communication online, including sharing news, seeking medical advice, obtaining public transportation information, and making requests for refunds or returns.
4. Improve grammatical accuracy by mastering more complex sentence structures and sentence patterns.
5. Continue identifying economic, social and cultural similarities and differences between Ireland and Chinese-speaking countries.
6. Utilise language-specific resources, such as dictionaries, online tools, and multimedia materials, to support independent language learning and research. Critically reflect on their own learning path in the future progression.
