Description
To introduce the student to the formats by which scientific knowledge is stored and the methods by which it can be retrieved.
To introduce the conventions used in scientific writing.
To explain plagiarism and to instil an appreciation of the ethical aspects of scientific writing.
To develop the skills required for effectiuve oral presentation of scientific information

| Assignment | The students will be split into groups of 5/supervisor. Each supervisor will give the students one paper to summarise. The students will have one week to write a 500-word extended abstract on the paper. | 15% | Week 8 | | Assignment | The students will be given two papers to read by their supervisors and must identify the high quality publication by comparing and contrasting based on type of journal, writing, methods, results. The student will be asked to write a 300 word summary of their findings, this will be assesed by the supervisor. | 15% | Week 9 | | Extended Essay / Dissertation | The students will have to choose a challenge-based topic for a 2000 word essay with the help of the supervisor. To promote constructive feedback, the topic of the essay must fall within the supervisor's area of expertise.
Students will perform a literature search and then meet and discuss with their supervisor the relevancy of the selected studies to be used as references.
Students must fill out an essay layout plan and discuss it with the supervisor. | 40% | Week 25 | | Presentation | Each student will choose and present one publication, one that was referenced in their essay. Resit arrangements are explained by the following categories;
RC1: A resit is available for both* components of the module.
RC2: No resit is available for a 100% coursework module.
RC3: No resit is available for the coursework component where there is a coursework and summative examination element.
* ‘Both’ is used in the context of the module having a coursework/summative examination split; where the module is 100% coursework, there will also be a resit of the assessment
