Description

To introduce the student to the formats by which scientific knowledge is stored and the methods by which it can be retrieved. To introduce the conventions used in scientific writing. To explain plagiarism and to instill an appreciation of the ethical aspects of scientific writing. To introduce the means and modalities in communicating scientific content. To develop the skills required for effective communication of scientific information to various audiences.

Written ExamThe students will be provided a research article. The students will need to critically appraise the article and answer a series of questions related to the scientific content contained within.40%Week 11
Group presentationThe students will be divided into groups of 4/5. They will be given a scientific topic, and each needs to source a recent research article on said topic, and supply it to the group. Between the articles sourced, a group presentation on the topic overall is to be created and delivered by the group.15%Week 21
PresentationThe students will develop and deliver a presentation on the research article they sourced on their designated topic, and answer questions related to such.30%Week 25
Group project The group will develop a ~2 minute information piece on their topic (short video) which could be used to disseminate knowledge on their designated topic to a general audience.15%Week 25
Reassessment Requirement Type
Resit arrangements are explained by the following categories;
RC1: A resit is available for both* components of the module.
RC2: No resit is available for a 100% coursework module.
RC3: No resit is available for the coursework component where there is a coursework and summative examination element.

* ‘Both’ is used in the context of the module having a coursework/summative examination split; where the module is 100% coursework, there will also be a resit of the assessment

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

The formats of scientific literature, articles, reviews, reports, textbooks, data bases

Accessing scientific knowledge and referencing systems

Scientific literature search on:

(i) a topic of broad scientific interest and

(ii) a topic of fundamental biological importance.

Preparation of content (presentations, video, etc.) on each of (i) and (ii) above.
