Description

This module aims to teach the student the structure and function of joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons of the lower limb, abdominal wall, pelvis and spine. This module will also provide a brief overview of the following systems: cardiopulmonary system, the endocrine system, the digestive system, the reproductive system, the integumentary system.

Learning Outcomes

1. Identify the major surface anatomy landmarks of the spine, pelvis and lower limb areas
2. Identify the location and surface markings of the major internal organs
3. Describe the origin and insertion of the main muscles in the spine, thoracic, abdominal, pelvic and lower limb regions
4. Describe the actions carried out by the muscles in the spine, pelvis and lower limb regions
5. Describe the structure and function of the main body systems
6. Describe the structure and function of the main joints in the spine, pelvis and lower limb regions

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Spinal anatomy and muscles of the back
Structure and function of structures of the spine, including bony anatomy, muscles, ligaments, intravertebral discs and the spinal cord.

Abdominal wall
Structure of the abdominal wall and their functions.

Hip and pelvis
Anatomy of the hip and pelvis including bony anatomy, muscles and ligaments.

Knee and thigh
Anatomy of the knee and thigh including bony anatomy, muscles and ligaments.

Shin and calf
Anatomy of the shin and calf including bony anatomy, muscles and ligaments.

Ankle and foot
Anatomy of the ankle and foot including bony anatomy, muscles and ligaments.

Major body systems and major organ markings
Including the cardiopulmonary system, the lymphatic system, the digestive system, the reproductive system and the endocrine system.

Nerve and blood supply to the lower limb
Including anatomy of the lumbosacral plexus and major arteries and veins. Also studied will be peripheral pulses, myotomes and dermatomes.
