Description

The purpose of this module is to help students to improve their Chinese language proficiency and strengthen their awareness of Chinese contemporary society. Students will be able to recognise and respond appropriately to linguistic nuances and register in a range of realistic situations such as presentations, discussions, and debates on a range of social, cultural, and political issues. Students will read more advanced texts in Chinese from a range of sources including news, media and literature to respond critically and appropriately to these texts and will be enabled to present well-founded arguments and opinions on the texts in written form.

Learning Outcomes

1. Express ideas clearly and accurately both orally and in writing through Chinese using complex grammatical structures and appropriate register.
2. Extract information from a variety of sources including newspapers, journals, current affairs programmes, additional internet sources, literary texts etc.
3. Present a complex topic in an interactive manner and in a register suitable for a particular situation.
4. Deliver a coherent argument orally and in writing in an appropriate register and style.
5. Demonstrate an awareness of Chinese culture and significant social, economic and cultural issues and events.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Contemporary society
The content will relate primarily to current affairs in a Chinese and global context, chronological change and development of Chinese culture and society, and wider Asian topical issues.

Learning skills
An additional focus will be on methodologies around researching, structuring and presenting arguments and information.
