Learning Outcomes 1. Plan for the integration of global citizenship education knowldge, skills, attitudes and dispositions into different areas of the primary curriculum and at all stages of primary education from infants to sixth class. 2. Critique different approaches to active citizenship and global citizenship education both at the levels of policy and practice 3. Select and design teaching and learning resources that are appropriate, creative and include digital components 4. Share and reflect on their own experiences of placement experiences and those experiences of others undertaking the module. 5. Indicative Content and Learning Activities
Module indicative content and activities This module includes an overview of global citizenship and from both a national and international perspective and a specific focus on the primary curriculum competency, being an active citizen (NCCA, 2023). The content will explore different approaches and frameworks and also critically analyse practice. Students will explore appropriate teaching strategies for the intergration of being an active citizen across the curriculum and at different stages of primary education in addition to whole school planning. The students will also have an opportunity to develop and deliver a GCE lesson for a primary school class to facilitate deeper understanding of global development, human rights, inclusion and equality. This will build on and extend students’ experiences and on their learning in global citizenship education. Developing an awareness of resources and networks in this area, the students will be encouraged to position themselves within a professional community of practice. Indicative content Students will have opportunities to explore a wide range of global justice themes such as trade, interdependence, conflict and peace.
