Description

The purpose of this module is to equip learners with the technical and digital skills, and the theoretical and pedagogical knowledge to be effective practitioners in the use of digital media and technologies in language learning. Using participatory and collaborative teaching approaches, students will gain experience with a range of digital tools and creative approaches for use in the language learning classroom. The module will develop student enquiry skills by facilitating them to explore and select appropriate teaching strategies to meet the needs of their students. This module also equips students with a broad understanding of digital and ICT policy, enabling them to critically evaluate the wider context of using technologies in language learning and reflect on their agency as a teacher in this regard.

Learning Outcomes

1. Demonstrate the digital skills to creatively use a variety of digital media and technologies in language learning.
2. Evaluate the potential and limitations of a variety of digital technologies and reflect on their application in language learning.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the pedagogical, social and technical issues in using digital media in language learning.
4. Critically reflect on different theoretical perspectives in using digital technologies and appraise their impact on teaching and learning in contemporary language learning.
5. Investigate how digital media and technology policies inform and influence the professional practice of language teachers in the Irish education system.

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

In each of the content sections below students discuss and reflect upon key literature on the use of

a given technology and its impact on professional practice, examine case studies on the technology’s use in practice, and improve digital skills through hands-on

experience at using the technology for themselves.

Digital Video in Language Learning
Locating and editing suitable video content for language learning. Adding interactivity to video content to assess learning. Developing an understanding of the importance of content evaluation.

Students as content creators
Collaborative learning approaches to content creation. Using video and audio creation tools to facilitate constructivist learning and language acquisition.

Digital Learning Resources
Sourcing, evaluating and integrating freely available language learning resources.

Principles of web design
Creation of a website/ web-based activity on a specific language area. Activity must adhere to standardised structure and format.

Apps for language learning
Sourcing, evaluating and integrating mobile applications for language learning.

Social media and language learning
Exploring the use of social media to encourage language acquisition and use. Reflect on the opportunities and challenges it presents.

Flipped Classroom
Understanding the design, implementation and review of the flipped classroom approach and how this may be used creatively in language learning.

Gamification
Investigating the use of games, and game-based learning to promote the acquisition and retention of languages.

Interactive Whiteboard
Students will develop basic skills and knowledge for using an interactive whiteboard.

Digital technology and ICT policy
Critically evaluate Irish and international policy on ICT and digital technology in schools, reflecting on its impact on professional practice
