Description

This module introduces the concepts of entrepreneurship and innovation from the perspective of individuals, firms, industries and countries. In this way it explores the concepts of innovation and entrepreneurship from a range of micro, meso and macro level perspectives. • The module describes the challenges individuals and firms face in pursuing entrepreneurship and innovation. It examines the individuals’ role in pursuing entrepreneurial activities and achieving success through strategic innovation and planning. • It identifies factors associated with success in entrepreneurship and innovation and explores the outcomes of entrepreneurship and innovation, including firm growth. These issues are explored in contexts such as new businesses, small- and medium sized enterprises, high growth firms, high-tech firms, and rapidly internationalizing firms. • The module introduces different perspectives, theories and research underpinning entrepreneurship and innovation. • In particular the module: o Provides an understanding of the different approaches to the management of entrepreneurship and innovation. o Reviews challenges and success factors in entrepreneurship and innovation. o Introduces a variety of models and tools to analyse and support innovation.

Learning Outcomes

1. Summarise the factors associated with success in entrepreneurship and innovation.
2. Discuss the factors that explain the growth of businesses.
3. Identify and explain the strategies, skills and systems necessary for innovation.
4. Evaluate the critical success factors demonstrated by entrepreneurs - with particular emphasis on how they have delivered growth and innovation in their sector.
5. Develop a critical awareness of the role of entrepreneurship and innovation as a key source of competitive advantage and growth.
