Description

The module will focus on the academic language skills necessary to meet the demands of studying in an English-speaking academic environment. There will also be a focus on academic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills as well as study and exam preparation skills. Students will develop their awareness of appropriacy and register in relation to their use of English in an academic environment. The minimum exit level for this module is B2:2 (CEFR)

Learning Outcomes

1. participate in discussions and make short oral presentations in an academic context
2. summarise the main points of detailed academic texts
3. process aural and written discourse effectively in order to understand the main points of listening and reading texts when used in academic contexts
4. use the conventions of academic discourse in relation to citing and referencing and avoiding plagiarism
5. critically evaluate a range of reading and digital materials and sources
6. manage, interpret and create meaning using a variety of digital devices and tools

Indicative Content and Learning Activities

Academic English
Using a variety of academic listening and reading texts, students will be given extensive practice in all four skills in an integrated fashion. Particular attention will be paid to the development of academic listening and speaking skills and to citing and referencing in academic discourse. Specific strategies for dealing with academic texts effectively will be focused on and students will be encouraged to refine their ability to display their knowledge effectively.
