Description

The module offers an introduction to the reading of literary texts in French in the context of the aesthetics, ideas and social & political history of the 20th Century. It will also develop basic techniques of critical textual analysis and commentary. As well as individual and collaborative reflection. The module is delivered through French/English.

Learning Outcomes

1. Critically read, understand and discuss selected literary texts in French from the modern era
2. Analyse thematic and stylistic features of studied texts using critical analysis vocabulary in French
3. Write a short commentary in French on an extract from the course texts
4. Situate the course texts in relation to the relevant aesthetic, historical, political and social contexts

Reading & Analyses / Literary Criticism & Personal Interpretations / History & Context
Study of themes, character depiction, use of language, textual analysis in some of Maupassant's short stories, such as 'Pierrot', 'La parure' and 'Le parapluie';



Study of literary figures and techniques;





Presentation of contextual social, political and literary history.
