Description

The course provides a critical toolkit for the analysis of literary texts, visual artefacts, and films in French. Students will study a range of modern and contemporary French and/or Francophone literary, visual, and cinematic works in order to develop their analytical, reading, and aural skills, as well as their understanding of artistic production and of French-speaking cultures. Students will also reflect on their own analyses, whether orally or in written form.The works studied may include prose, film, painting, poetry, song, and street photography. Through close study, students will identify and come to understand various aesthetic functions, such as those of characters, narrative structure, literary form, motifs, narrative voice, pictorial composition, framing, and cinematic technique. The social and cultural history behind the works in question will be an integral part of the learning.

Learning Outcomes

1. Interpret literary and visual artefacts arising out of the contemporary French-speaking world and reflect on his or her own interpretations.
2. Manipulate relevant critical tools for an informed understanding of the works
3. Assess the specific socio-historical context of each work, and of each culture studied
4. Inscribe his/her written and/or oral critical discourse in an organised and informed manner
