Description The purpose of this module is to introduce students to elements of the global physical environment and human interaction with this through the examination of hazards. Every so often, the earth reminds us that the ground beneath our feet is not as solid as we might like to think. This module will look at why these events, and others like them, occur, and what we can do to minimise human risk. In this module students develop knowledge and skills in global seismic hazards, general global oceanography, and river environments. The module is taught around learning statements with associated in-class activities within a lecture-format, supported by in-class assessment for learning throughout. Learning Outcomes 1. Identify and explain the key processes that create our physical landscape, in terms of plate tectonics and rivers 2. Distinguish key features of the global oceans 3. Identify some ways of how the physical landscape impacts on human lives and how we can minimize this risk 4. Identify some aspects of human’s impact on the landscape 5.
