Description

Why has migration across international borders become such a defining issue in contemporary politics? What drives millions to leave their homes and seek to settle elsewhere (climate breakdown, conflict, poverty & inequality)? How do growing diasporas relate to their 'homelands', whilst building their lives alongside a host society, often in urban settings? This module examines these questions from a geographical point of view.

Learning Outcomes

1. Explore geographies of historical and contemporary migration and diaspora in a variety of global contexts.
2. Understand and critically evaluate a range of research problems and methodologies relating to the study of migration and diaspora.
3. Navigate and interpret a range of data from scholarly, governmental and non-governmental sources.
4. Critically analyse contemporary media and political discourse in relation to migration and diaspora.
5. Construct an argument using logical and rhetorical design in written and oral forms.
