Description

This module introduces students to the literary and visual art works of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Germany and the political and societal context of the production and reception of these works, for example in Romanticism and Expressionism. Visual works considered in addition to literary ones will include paintings and films. The module is mainly delivered through German, with some English.

Learning Outcomes

1. Analyse and interpret German-language literary texts and visual works of art on the basis of close reading.
2. Understand and discuss, in German, works covered in class, using appropriate vocabulary and linguistic knowledge.
3. Critically reflect on links between the production and reception of literary texts and societal developments.
4. Recognise and analyse the intertextual links between works of art from different epochs.
5. Demonstrate sustained participation and engagement with the course content.

Indicative content and learning activities
Students are expected to participate regularly and actively in weekly in-person classes. They will moreover conduct both independent and collaborative work in the course of the module, as well as regular reading/viewing and associated analytical and reflective tasks to demonstrate their engagement with the course content.

Module resources
Specific works and resources will be confirmed by the lecturer at the start of the semester but are likely to include two types of literary texts, a film and a number of complementary primary and secondary sources.
